The objective of the activity in Topolobampo on October 14th-16th was to train captains to use Helm.

Héctor López, who is responsible for processes and projects at SAAM Towage Mexico, told us, “We wanted to approach training with practical examples so that they can start using the software faster. One of the training sessions even included a real-time maneuver.”

The three captains from the three shifts on the Mara and Apolo tugs in the port of Topolobampo learned about locations, operations and port-related information. They were able to apply the concepts to the platform to provide valuable, quality information.

They currently use paper and pencil to record their maneuvers. So, the implementation of Helm, where information like agencies, lines and ships can be pre-loaded, is a major change in how information is captured and processed.

Héctor tells us that actively using Helm is next. “We are working out some glitches on the interface with the ERP system. Then, we will be able to operate at 100% like the other ports where SAAM Towage operates in Mexico.”
